The sand still held some of the day’s heat as the young couple lay under the giant hau tree.\u00a0 The moon was almost full and lit the beach and crests of the lapping waves.\u00a0 Around the curve of the shore, the hotels of Waikiki could be seen glittering like towers of Christmas tree lights above the busy strip of clubs and restaurants.\u00a0 Although close by, very little sound from the traffic and nightspots could be heard on this side of Queen’s Beach.\u00a0 No one observed the lovers as they kissed on the blanket.<\/p>\n

“Are you cold?” she asked him.<\/p>\n

“No, are you?”<\/p>\n

“No.\u00a0 Want to go swimming, then?”<\/p>\n

“Are you nuts?\u00a0 Things come out at night to feed around here.”\u00a0 He pretended to shiver and clasped her close again.<\/p>\n

“I know just the place where there’s nothing to eat you.”\u00a0 She giggled, pulled him off the blanket and ran laughing toward a stuccoed structure with large, arched openings.<\/p>\n

“Wow, it’s huge!\u00a0 Like an Olympic-sized pool!\u00a0 What is this?” he asked.<\/p>\n

“It’s the Natatorium.\u00a0 It’s a memorial they built after World War I.\u00a0 It’s the largest salt-water swimming pool in the world or something.\u00a0 They used to have swimming meets and stuff here, way back then.\u00a0 It was open to the public, too.\u00a0 It hasn’t been used for years, though.\u00a0 They can’t decide if they should tear it down or build it back up.\u00a0 Help me up,” she commanded.<\/p>\n

He boosted her onto the four-foot wall surrounding the cement deck.\u00a0 On the parking lot side, concrete bleachers blocked out the stars.\u00a0 The other three sides were open to the night.<\/p>\n

“If it hasn’t been used in years, why is there water in it?” he asked, jumping down to the deck.<\/p>\n

“It’s open to the ocean somehow, and water comes and goes with the tide.\u00a0 Only it must be blocked–it smells pretty gross.”<\/p>\n

“It doesn’t look too healthy in there, either.\u00a0 Let’s not swim.\u00a0 Let’s go back to the hau tree.”\u00a0 He smiled and reached for her hand, but she pointed to the middle of the pool.<\/p>\n

“What’s that?”<\/p>\n

“What?”<\/p>\n

“It looks like a dead fish or something.”\u00a0 A shiny white object floated a third of the way down the pool. Suddenly it shifted, and an entire human arm became visible in the bright moonlight.<\/p>\n

“Oh my god!” the girl shrieked and ran to the wall, leaping the barrier that had required a boost from her muscular young man only moments before.\u00a0 He followed, clearing the wall by a foot.\u00a0 They ran to the Hau Tree Lanai restaurant and sailed over that seawall, too.\u00a0 The restaurant was closed, but the adjacent hotel wasn’t.\u00a0 They bounded up the steps, startled a small group of Japanese tourists, and reached the front desk.<\/p>\n

Gasping and crying, the girl said, “Oh my god!” and draped herself over the registration book.<\/p>\n

The alarmed desk clerk turned his attention to the boy who said, “There’s a body!\u00a0 A dead body!\u00a0 An arm of a body!… in the pool!” between huge, gasping breaths.<\/p>\n

The clerk dialed housekeeping while asking, “What, our pool?\u00a0 Is it a guest?”<\/p>\n

“No.\u00a0 Not hotel pool.\u00a0 Ocean pool.\u00a0 Nata… Nata…” he panted.<\/p>\n
