Writers Exchange E-Publishing respects your privacy. This policy explains what we collect when you use writers-exchange.com, why we collect it, and who else ever sees it. We have tried to write it in plain English rather than legal language.
In short: we do not use advertising cookies, we do not track you across other websites, and we do not sell or share your personal information with advertisers.
Who we are
Writers Exchange E-Publishing is a book publisher based in Australia, publishing ebooks and audiobooks since 2000.
If you have any question about your information, or want it deleted, write to publisher@writers-exchange.com and we will answer personally.
What we collect, and why
When you buy a book
We record your name, your email address, what you bought and when. We need this to deliver your book, to let you download it again later from your account, and to keep proper business records.
Payment is handled entirely by PayPal. Your card details are entered on PayPal, never on our site, and we never see or store them. We are told only that a payment succeeded and for how much.
When you create an account
We store your email address, your password and your order and download history. Your password is stored scrambled, using one-way encryption, so nobody at Writers Exchange can read it, including us.
When you join our newsletter or the Book Club
We store your email address, your first name if you give it, and which lists you have chosen. We use double opt-in, which means you must confirm by clicking a link in an email before we ever send you anything. If you never confirm, you never hear from us.
Every email we send has an unsubscribe link, and you can change which emails you receive at any time from your account.
We do record whether our emails are opened and whether links in them are clicked. We use this to see whether an announcement was of interest, not to build a profile of you.
When you write a review
We store the name you give, the review itself, and your email address if you are signed in. Your name and review may be shown publicly on the book page. Your email address is never shown.
When you simply read the site
We count visits so we know which books people are interested in. This is our own counting, on our own server. It is not Google Analytics and no outside company is involved.
For each page viewed we record:
- the page address
- the website you arrived from, if any
- whether you are on a phone, tablet or computer
- a random code for the browsing session, which is not linked to your name, your email or any account
- your internet address with the last part removed, so it identifies a rough area rather than a person
We do not use any cookie for this counting. If you are signed in, we do not connect your name to it.
Cookies
The site sets one cookie, called laravel-session. It is what remembers your shopping cart and keeps you signed in. Without it the cart and your account would not work.
We do not set advertising cookies, tracking cookies, or any cookie that follows you to other websites.
Who else sees your information
Very few, and only where it is needed to run the shop:
- PayPal, who take the payment. They handle your card details; we never receive them.
- Postmark, who deliver our emails. They see your email address in order to send the message.
- Our web host, who stores the site and its database on a secure server.
We send a list of our books to Pinterest, Facebook and Instagram so they can show our covers and prices. That list contains book titles, descriptions, prices, covers and links. It contains no information about you at all.
We do not sell your information. We do not give it to advertisers or data brokers. We do not share it with our authors.
How long we keep things
Order records are kept as long as the law requires us to keep business records, and so that you can always download a book you have paid for.
Newsletter details are kept until you unsubscribe, after which we keep only enough to make sure we do not email you again by mistake.
Visit counts are kept as general statistics and are not tied to anyone.
Your choices
- You can unsubscribe from any email using the link at the bottom of it.
- You can see and change your details, and see your orders and downloads, from your account page.
- You can ask us to delete your account and your details. Where we must keep a record of a sale for tax purposes, we will tell you what has to stay and why.
Write to publisher@writers-exchange.com for any of these.
Children
Some of our books are written for children, but our shop is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has given us their details, tell us and we will remove them.
Security
The site is served over a secure encrypted connection. Passwords are stored scrambled and cannot be read. Sign-in attempts are limited to slow down anyone trying to guess a password.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle information, we will update this page and change the date below. Substantial changes affecting subscribers will be mentioned in a newsletter.
